Alpine Totara 'Kilworth Cream'
Podocarpus nivalis 'Kilworth Cream' is a charming and unusual dwarf conifer from New Zealand that performs well in the UK. It has a low, spreading, or mounded habit with small, leathery, needle-like leaves. The standout feature of this cultivar is the new growth, which emerges a beautiful creamy-white against the older, dark green foliage, giving the plant a variegated look in spring and summer. It is surprisingly hardy (H4/H5) but prefers a somewhat sheltered position in colder northern regions. It is an excellent choice for a rock garden, the front of a border, or a container. It prefers well-drained, slightly acidic soil and does not like to be waterlogged. Over time, it can produce small red berries (on female plants), which are attractive but should not be eaten. Its fine texture and slow growth rate make it a sophisticated choice for gardeners looking for something beyond the more common conifers.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Well-drained, acidic to neutral soil.
Hardiness: H4 — down to −10°C.
Flowering: May, Jun.
