Mountain Plum Pine 'Red Tip'

Podocarpus lawrencei 'Red Tip' is a delightful prostrate conifer originating from the mountains of Australia and Tasmania, making it surprisingly well-suited to the UK climate. It is most famous for its stunning spring growth, where the tips of the foliage emerge in a vibrant, coppery-red shade before gradually turning to a dark, blue-green. The leaves are small, narrow, and leathery, forming a dense mat that works beautifully as ground cover or cascading over the edge of a wall or container. While it is a conifer, it produces berry-like red cones on female plants, which add further seasonal interest. It is hardy down to H4 or H5 in sheltered spots, preferring a site that is protected from cold, drying winds. It loves well-drained soil and is particularly effective in a rock garden or woodland edge setting. Its slow growth and changing colours make it a captivating choice for gardeners looking for something slightly different.
