Mountain Plum Pine 'Blueberry'

'Blueberry' is a compact, low-growing cultivar of the Mountain Plum Pine, particularly noted for its distinctive blue-grey foliage. It forms a dense, spreading mound that is excellent as a ground cover or for spilling over the edges of walls and containers. The new growth often has a soft reddish-purple tint before maturation. This conifer is hardy (H4/H5) and is particularly well-suited to the milder parts of the UK or coastal gardens, where it tolerates wind well. It prefers a position in full sun to partial shade with well-drained, neutral to acidic soil. One of its most charming features is the production of small, fleshy, bright red "fruits" (actually modified cones) in autumn, which are preceded by insignificant flowers. It is very slow-growing and requires minimal maintenance, making it a fine choice for rockeries or small evergreen borders. Its fine-textured leaves provide a soft look compared to many pricklier conifers.
