Simon Bamboo (Variegated) 'Variegatus'
This is an upright, vigorous running bamboo that is quite different in appearance from most other small Pleioblastus varieties. It can reach 3-4 metres in height. The most notable feature is its long, narrow leaves which are irregularly striped with white. Some leaves may be nearly all white, while others are entirely green, giving the plant a very lively, flickering appearance in the breeze. It is very hardy (H5) and makes an excellent, dense screen or a bold specimen. Because it is a runner with a relatively fast spread, it should be given its own space or contained with a root barrier. It is one of the more sun-tolerant variegated bamboos, though it also performs well in light shade. It is very versatile regarding soil but will grow most quickly in a moisture-retentive, fertile environment. Pruning out older canes helps maintain the brightness of the variegation.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Any reasonable, moist soil.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
