Hinds's Bamboo
Pleioblastus hindsii is a remarkably tall, upright, and architectural bamboo that is often overlooked in UK horticulture. Unlike many other Pleioblastus which are low-growing, P. hindsii can reach 4 to 5 metres in height. It has a very vertical habit, with branches held close to the culms, making it ideal for narrow spaces where a tall screen is required. The leaves are long, dark green, and somewhat stiff, arranged in distinct tufts at the nodes. It is a vigorous runner and must be planted with a root barrier to prevent it from colonising the garden. It is fully hardy (H5) and very adaptable, growing well in full sun or partial shade. It is particularly effective when used as a tall, thin hedge or as a vertical accent against a modern building. It is also surprisingly tolerant of salt spray, making it a potential candidate for sheltered coastal gardens. The culms were historically used for making arrows and flutes.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Any well-drained soil.
Hardiness: H5 — down to −15°C.
