Lobster Flower

Plectranthus neochilus is an aromatic, succulent-leaved perennial that is often used as a groundcover in warmer climates but is a fantastic patio plant in the UK. It has small, scalloped, fleshy blue-green leaves that have a pungent, herb-like scent when bruised. It forms a dense, low-growing mound that is highly effective at suppressing weeds in a container display. From spring through to autumn, it produces upright spikes of attractive, deep purple or blue flowers that resemble small lobsters. In the UK, it is rated H3/H4 depending on the specific location, meaning it can survive outdoors in mild coastal gardens if perfectly drained, but is safer brought indoors or protected during the winter. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant and thrives in full sun, which helps to keep the growth tight and the flower production high. It is an excellent choice for a low-maintenance 'summer bedding' succulent or as part of a Mediterranean-style container arrangement.
