London Plane
The London Plane is an extremely well-regarded and resilient large deciduous tree, synonymous with London's streets and parks. A hybrid, it can reach impressive heights of 20-30 metres with a broad, spreading crown. Its most recognisable feature is its exfoliating bark, which peels in flakes to reveal patches of pale cream, olive, and grey, giving it a striking mottled appearance. Large, maple-like leaves appear in spring, and the bristly, spherical seed heads persist through winter. Exceptionally tolerant of pollution and urban conditions, it's very hardy and thrives in most well-drained soils in full sun. Ideal for avenues and large open spaces.
