Pea (Maincrop) 'Onward'
'Onward' is arguably the most popular maincrop pea variety in the UK, prized for its exceptionally high yields and superb flavour. This traditional variety produces blunt-ended, dark green pods, typically in pairs, each packed with 6 to 8 large, succulent peas. The peas are remarkably sweet and tender, making them a favourite for eating fresh from the pod or light cooking. Reaching a height of about 60-75cm, the plants are relatively compact and manageable but still benefit from support with pea sticks or netting. It is a reliable performer with good resistance to powdery mildew and wilt, which helps extend the harvest into mid-summer. For the best results, sow from March to June in a sunny position. Peas thrive in moist, fertile soil that has been well-dug. Frequent harvesting encourages the plant to continue producing pods. It is an ideal choice for the home gardener looking for a high-quality, classic pea experience.
