Mastic Tree
A quintessential evergreen shrub of the Mediterranean garrigue, Pistacia lentiscus is grown in the UK for its beautiful, leathery, dark green pinnate foliage and its resinous scent. It has a dense, bushy habit, typically forming a rounded shrub about 2-3 metres tall over time. In spring, it produces small, inconspicuous reddish flowers, followed by tiny berries that turn from red to black. In the UK, it is considered slightly tender (H3) and is best suited to mild, coastal regions or a very sheltered south-facing wall in frost-prone areas. It is exceptionally drought-tolerant and thrives in poor, stony, well-drained soils. Its glossy, architectural leaves provide an excellent backdrop for showier Mediterranean plants. It also responds well to clipping, making it a possible candidate for slow-growing, drought-proof hedging in warmer counties. It is rare in UK cultivation but offers a truly authentic Southern European atmosphere.
