Scots Pine 'Gold Coin'

'Gold Coin' is a spectacular cultivar of our native Scots Pine, specifically selected for its dramatic seasonal colour change. In the summer months, the needles are a pleasant light green, but as the temperatures drop in autumn and winter, they transform into a brilliant, glowing golden-yellow. This makes it an outstanding plant for winter interest in the UK. It has a slow-growing, compact, conical habit, reaching about 2 metres in ten years. It is extremely hardy (H7) and very easy to grow, provided it is planted in full sun and well-drained soil; the winter gold is most intense when the plant is in an exposed, sunny position. It is drought-tolerant and handles poor soils well. This is a perfect specimen plant for a heathland-style garden or to provide a splash of "sunshine" during the darkest months of the year.
