Scots Pine selection 'Aurea'
Pinus sylvestris 'Aurea' is a legendary "winter gold" conifer. During the late spring and summer, it appears as a typical, attractive Scots Pine with needles of a soft, blue-green. However, as the first frosts arrive, the foliage begins a dramatic transformation, turning a brilliant, glowing yellow-gold that remains until the spring. This provides a spectacular and much-needed burst of colour in the winter landscape. It is a slow-growing selection, eventually becoming a medium-sized tree with an open, picturesque habit. As it matures, it develops the beautiful flaky, orange-red bark that Pinus sylvestris is famous for, adding further aesthetic appeal. It is extremely hardy (H7) and thrives in well-drained, acidic to neutral soil in full sun. It is particularly effective when planted where the low winter sun can catch its golden needles. It is a superb choice for a large rock garden or as a specimen tree in a mixed border, bringing a reliable "wow" factor to the coldest months.
