Bosnian Pine 'Compact Gem'

'Compact Gem' is a superb dwarf version of the Bosnian Pine, forming a very tight, slow-growing, upright pyramid. It is prized for its exceptionally dark green needles which are held in pairs and have a glossy finish. These are offset by attractive white terminal buds in winter, often referred to as "candles". This conifer is remarkably hardy (H7) and resistant to harsh conditions, including wind, cold, and coastal salt spray. It typically reaches only 1.5 to 2 metres in height after many decades, making it a perfect architectural plant for small gardens or large containers where space is at a premium. It requires full sun and very well-drained soil to thrive and prevent root rot. Its neat, manicured appearance without the need for trimming makes it a favourite for formal gardens and rockeries. It is also generally less susceptible to pine pests and diseases.

Sun: Full sun.

Soil: Well-drained, gritty soil.

Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
