Japanese Red Pine 'Umbraculifera'
The Japanese Red Pine 'Umbraculifera' is a highly ornamental, multi-stemmed evergreen conifer, forming a distinctive, flattened, umbrella-like crown atop a relatively short trunk. Its long, bright green needles are held in pairs, and the bark on older stems develops an attractive reddish-orange hue, adding winter interest. It is hardy, preferring full sun and well-drained, acidic soil, and tolerates coastal conditions. Inconspicuous 'flowers' lead to small cones. This cultivar is an excellent choice for a specimen plant in a Japanese garden, as a focal point, or in a rock garden where its unique form can be appreciated.
