Japanese Andromeda 'Wakehurst'
Pieris japonica 'Wakehurst' is an outstanding evergreen shrub, highly prized for its vibrant, fiery scarlet new growth in spring that gradually matures to dark green. This dramatic flush of colour makes it a superb focal point in a UK garden. In early spring, it also produces attractive, pendulous clusters of delicate white, bell-shaped flowers, adding further ornamental value. Growing to an average height and spread of 2-3 metres, it forms a dense, bushy habit. 'Wakehurst' thrives in a sheltered position in partial shade and requires moist, well-drained, acidic soil. It is relatively hardy, but protection from harsh winds and late frosts is advisable to preserve the tender new growth.
