Colorado Spruce cultivar 'The Blues'
A dramatic and highly ornamental weeping conifer, 'The Blues' is a cultivar of the Colorado Spruce that brings an artistic, sculptural element to the garden. Unlike the standard upright spruces, this variety has a strongly pendulous habit, with branches that drape vertically. If staked when young, it can be trained to a desired height, from which its leaders will cascade downward like a blue waterfall; if left unstaked, it will form a spectacular, mounding ground cover. The needles are a vivid, powdery steel-blue, providing intense colour throughout the year. It is fully hardy (H7) and robust, thriving in most UK garden soils provided they are well-drained. It is particularly effective when planted near water features or on a slope where its weeping form can be fully appreciated. It is slow to medium in growth rate and requires a sunny position to develop its best blue coloration and maintain a dense foliage habit.
Sun: Full sun.
Soil: Moist but well-drained, slightly acidic soil.
Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
