Caucasian Spruce 'Skylands'
Picea orientalis 'Skylands' is one of the most magnificent golden conifers available, widely considered a "noble" plant by UK horticulturists. It grows into a stately, upright, pyramidal tree with short, blunt needles that are a brilliant, glowing gold year-round. The interior of the tree remains a contrasting dark green. While it can eventually reach a significant height, it is slow-growing. It is hardy (H6), but young plants should be protected from the most intense direct afternoon sun in their first few years to prevent needle scorch. Once established, it is a beacon of light in the garden, especially during the dark winter months. It produces small, attractive purple cones in spring that mature to brown. It requires well-drained soil and a position with enough space to eventually showcase its majestic form. This cultivar is a recipient of the RHS Award of Garden Merit and is a true connoisseur's plant for larger gardens.
