Engelmann Spruce
The Engelmann Spruce is a medium to large evergreen conifer, forming a narrowly conical to pyramidal tree with softly textured, often somewhat pendulous branches. It typically reaches an ultimate height of 20-30m and a spread of 6-10m. Its soft, flexible, blue-green needles have a faint aroma when crushed and are arranged spirally around the shoots. This species thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers moist, well-drained, acidic soil. It is exceptionally hardy in the UK (H7) and often found in high-altitude environments. Small, slender, pale brown cones are produced. An elegant and resilient spruce, particularly suited to cooler, more exposed gardens, offering fine texture and appealing foliage colour for year-round enjoyment.
