NinebarkBase 'Lady in Red'
'Lady in Red' is a vibrant deciduous shrub that brings a contemporary feel to hedging. It is prized for its lobed foliage that emerges a bright, translucent red in spring, darkening to a rich burgundy-red as the season progresses. In early summer, it produces attractive flat clusters of small, pinkish-white flowers that contrast beautifully with the dark leaves, followed by small red fruits. As the plant ages, the bark on the stems peels away in layers (hence the name 'Ninebark'), providing structural interest in the winter. It has a naturally bushy, upright habit, making it easy to train into a unique and colourful informal hedge. It is exceptionally hardy and easy to grow, tolerating a wide range of conditions including acidic soils and partial shade, though the best leaf colour is achieved in full sun. It is a great alternative to purple beech for gardeners who want something a bit different and faster-growing.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained, acidic to neutral soil.
Hardiness: H7 — below −20°C.
