Ninebark 'Darts Gold'
Physocarpus opulifolius 'Dart's Gold' is a vibrant deciduous shrub that makes a stunning, informal boundary or hedging plant. It is primarily grown for its glowing, golden-yellow foliage which emerges bright in spring. As the season progresses, the leaves turn a lime-green before shifting to bronzy tones in autumn. In early summer, it produces clusters of small, white or pink-flushed flowers that are popular with pollinators, followed by small reddish fruits. The plant gets its common name 'Ninebark' from its attractive, peeling bark on older stems, which provides winter interest. 'Dart's Gold' has a bushy, upright-to-arching habit and is very hardy, making it well-suited to the UK climate. It is not fussy about soil type and can handle both acidic and alkaline conditions, provided they are moist but well-drained. For the brightest yellow foliage, it should be planted in full sun, as the leaves will stay more green in shaded positions. Pruning can be done in mid-summer after flowering.
