Tomatillo
Tomatillo (Physalis ixocarpa) is a delightful relative of the tomato, producing green or purple fruits encased in a papery husk, essential for authentic Mexican salsas. The flavour is tart and fresh. This tender annual (H1C) forms a bushy plant up to 1m tall and 70cm wide. Small yellow flowers appear in summer, with fruits ripening from late summer to autumn. It requires full sun and well-drained, fertile soil, ideally in a sheltered spot or greenhouse in the UK. Plant at least two for good fruit set as they are not self-pollinating. A rewarding and exotic crop for culinary adventurers.
