Giant Timber Bamboo 'Huangwenzhu'
A spectacular giant timber bamboo that makes a bold architectural statement in larger UK gardens. This cultivar is distinguished by its thick, pale green culms featuring a prominent yellow stripe in the sulcus (groove). It is one of the fastest-growing bamboos in the British climate, capable of reaching impressive heights quickly. The habit is upright with lush, drooping green foliage that provides excellent screening. While it is hardy throughout most of the UK (H5), it requires a site sheltered from cold, drying winds which can damage the large leaves. It thrives in rich, moist, but well-drained soil. Like many Phyllostachys, it is a running bamboo and should be planted with a root barrier to control its spread. It rarely flowers in the UK, but when it does, it is insignificantly small. It is particularly valued for the sheer scale and beauty of its timber-like canes.
