Green Sulphur Bamboo
Phyllostachys viridis, often known as Green Sulphur Bamboo, is a robust, running bamboo prized for its substantial, thick culms that emerge green and ripen to a soft, glossy apple-green or yellowish-green, especially with sun exposure. This impressive species can reach an ultimate height of 5-8 metres with a wide spread if not contained, making it suitable for larger gardens. It is exceptionally hardy, rated H5, tolerating temperatures down to -20°C, proving very reliable in the UK climate. 'Viridis' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, well-drained, consistently moist soil to achieve its best growth and colour. Flowering is rare. Its strong, upright culms provide excellent architectural interest and can form an effective, dense screen, particularly attractive in winter.
