Large-leaved Cane Bamboo
A very elegant and tall running bamboo that is often overlooked in favour of the Black or Golden bamboos. It has beautiful, arching canes that emerge a soft green and age to a more yellowish-green, often with a white waxy bloom below the nodes. The leaves are slightly larger and more pendulous than many other Phyllostachys, giving the whole plant a very graceful, 'weeping' appearance. It is a large and vigorous grower, easily reaching 6-8 metres in the UK, so it needs plenty of room or a serious root barrier. It is very hardy (H6) and is one of the best species for creating a tall, dense evergreen screen that sways beautifully in the wind. It is also more tolerant of alkaline soils than some other species. It produces a large number of canes quickly, providing a very full look within a few years of planting.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Moist but well-drained, versatile soil.
Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
