Prominent Bamboo
Phyllostachys prominens is a stately timber bamboo that is often overlooked but deserves more recognition for its cold hardiness and impressive culm thickness. Known as the 'Prominent Bamboo' due to its large, swollen nodes, it produces thick, dark green canes that can reach 6-9 metres in height. In the UK, it is one of the most reliable large-scale bamboos, coping well with cold winters (H5). Its habit is strongly upright, providing excellent vertical structure. As a running bamboo, it requires a large garden or a robust root barrier. The foliage is lush and heavy, making it an effective windbreak or privacy screen. It prefers a sunny site and responds well to regular feeding with a nitrogen-rich fertilizer in spring. The canes are very strong and were traditionally used for construction in its native China. It is a fantastic choice for a large, architectural statement where a tropical, 'jungle' feel is desired.
