Small-Leaf Bamboo

Despite its name, this is a giant among bamboos. Phyllostachys parvifolia is one of the most cold-hardy large timber bamboos available, making it a top choice for northern UK gardens. It produces massive, thick green culms that can rival Moso in diameter, yet it is far better suited to the British climate. The 'small leaf' part of its name refers to the dainty foliage which creates a clouds-like effect, contrasting beautifully with the heavy, powerful canes. It can reach 8-10 metres in height. This is a running bamboo with significant spread, so it needs a large area or professional-grade containment. It is hardy to H6 and can tolerate significant wind once established. It prefers a sunny position and deep, fertile soil. The new shoots are also edible and highly regarded. This is a premium choice for creating a fast, dramatic, and permanent evergreen forest effect.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
