Black Bamboo 'Violascens'

Phyllostachys nigra 'Violascens' is a striking running bamboo cultivar, a variant of the classic Black Bamboo, prized for its culms that mature from green to a deep, lustrous purplish-black, often with a glaucous bloom. This elegant species can reach an ultimate height of 4-7 metres with a spreading habit, requiring rhizome control. It is very hardy, rated H5, tolerating temperatures down to -20°C, making it a reliable choice for most UK gardens. 'Violascens' thrives in full sun to partial shade and prefers fertile, well-drained, and consistently moist soil. Flowering is rare. Its striking dark culms and delicate, dark green leaves create a sophisticated architectural statement, ideal as a specimen plant or for creating a dense, year-round screen. The deeper colour often develops better in full sun.
