Henon Bamboo 'Henonis'

While the Black Bamboo is famous, its parent form 'Henonis' is often considered by experts to be the superior garden plant for the UK. Rather than turning black, the culms of 'Henonis' remain a beautiful, dusty olive-green, occasionally maturing to a soft greyish-yellow. It is much more vigorous, tall, and hardy (H5-H6) than the black-caned form. It produces a dense canopy of very small, shimmering green leaves that create a cloud-like effect. It is perhaps the most elegant of all the large Phyllostachys, often used in high-end UK landscaping to create sophisticated, airy screens or groves. It is a running bamboo and requires plenty of space or a robust root barrier. It is very wind-tolerant for a large bamboo and manages well in most soil types, provided they are moist and well-drained. In autumn, the foliage often takes on a slightly silvery sheen, which is very attractive in the low light.
