Incense Bamboo

Commonly known as the 'Incense Bamboo' due to the subtle fragrance released when the culms are rubbed or cut, this is a vigorous and sturdy species well-suited to the UK. It produces thick, heavy culms that are initially deep green with subtle yellowish stripes, maturing to a rich, glossy green. The culms have a distinctive 'iridescent' quality in certain lights. It has an upright, slightly spreading habit and is very effective as a dense, tall screen or windbreak. It is extremely hardy (H5) and handles UK winters with ease. It prefers fertile, well-drained soil and a sunny position to encourage the best culm development and colour. As a running bamboo, it requires space to develop or a sturdy root barrier. The foliage is relatively large and dark green, providing a lush backdrop throughout the year.
