Flexible Bamboo

Phyllostachys flexuosa is an elegant and highly adaptable bamboo that brings a graceful, weeping silhouette to the UK garden. It is characterized by its slender, dark green canes that often transition to almost black as they age in direct sunlight. The foliage is fine-textured and pendulous, creating a soft, shimmering effect in the wind. Reaching heights of 4 to 6 metres, it is an excellent choice for creating a dense, evergreen screen or a striking specimen plant. It is fully hardy (H5) and performs well even in the cooler, wetter regions of the UK. Unlike some robust Phyllostachys, its graceful habit makes it feel less imposing in medium-sized gardens. It prefers a sheltered spot to protect the delicate leaves from drying winds. Shoots typically emerge in late spring. It thrives in moist but well-drained, fertile soil. Like many bamboos, flowering is a rare and often terminal event, occurring only once every many decades.
