Candy Cane Bamboo 'Spectabilis'

Phyllostachys aureosulcata 'Spectabilis', often called Candy Cane Bamboo, is a visually striking running bamboo renowned for its vibrant, golden-yellow culms dramatically striped with a contrasting green sulcus (groove). This strong ornamental feature gives it its common name. Reaching 4-6 metres, it creates an impressive and colourful screen or focal point. Due to its vigorous spreading nature, a robust root barrier is essential in garden settings. It is very hardy (H6), tolerating various conditions but performing best in full sun to partial shade with well-drained soil. Flowering is infrequent and inconspicuous. Its bright, cheerful culms provide year-round interest and are particularly effective when planted where winter sun can illuminate their colourful stripes.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Well-drained loam.

Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
