Crooked-Stem Bamboo 'Argus'
'Argus' is a striking and colourful cultivar of the reliable Yellow-Groove Bamboo. The culms are predominantly bright yellow but are decorated with numerous, irregular, vertical green stripes of varying widths. Like other P. aureosulcata varieties, some of the lower culms often grow in a 'zigzag' or 'crooked' fashion, adding to its architectural charm. It is a tall, upright, and very hardy (H6) bamboo that is excellently suited to the UK's erratic climate. It makes a fantastic, high-impact privacy screen or container specimen. The foliage is a lush, dark green and stays dense right down to the ground. It is a running bamboo and will spread if not contained with a root barrier. It is particularly valued because it remains attractive even in very cold winters. It prefers a sunny position to develop the best culm colour and requires fertile, well-drained soil to thrive.
Sun: Full sun to partial shade.
Soil: Fertile, well-drained loam.
Hardiness: H6 — down to −20°C.
