Fishpole Bamboo

Phyllostachys aurea, commonly known as Fishpole Bamboo, is a popular running bamboo recognised by its distinctive compressed nodes at the base of the culms, resembling tortoiseshell. The culms are initially green, maturing to a golden-yellow, providing bright year-round colour. It can reach 4-6 metres in UK gardens, forming a dense evergreen screen or attractive specimen. Due to its vigorous spreading nature, root barriers are essential to control its growth. It is very hardy (H6), thriving in full sun to partial shade and well-drained soil, though it dislikes exposed, windy sites. Flowering is rare and inconspicuous. 'Aurea' is an excellent choice for creating a living screen, for its ornamental culms, or for erosion control on slopes (with containment).
