Incense Bamboo heart

Commonly known as the 'Incense Bamboo', this species is famous for the delicate fragrance—reminiscent of sandalwood or incense—emitted by the culms when rubbed. It is an impressively fast-growing timber bamboo with an upright, stately habit, reaching 6-8 metres in the UK. The culms are dark green and notably stiff. One of its most valuable traits for the British gardener is its ability to tolerate wetter soils than most other Phyllostachys, thanks to air canals in its rhizomes. While it still prefers well-drained conditions, it is much more forgiving of occasional waterlogging. It is extremely hardy (H6). As a runner, it requires space and containment. The foliage is lush and provides a fine screen. It is an excellent choice for a large specimen or a fast-growing privacy hedge. Its scent and architectural presence make it a sensory delight in any large garden.
