Norfolk Reed 'Variegatus'

Phragmites australis 'Variegatus' is a strikingly ornamental version of the common reed, distinguished by its bold yellow and green striped foliage. This deciduous perennial grass is much less invasive than the species, though it still possesses a creeping rhizomatous root system that requires containment in garden ponds. Growing to about 1.5 meters, it provides excellent vertical structure and high-contrast color. The variegation remains bright throughout the growing season, turning a golden-brown in winter. It produces tall, feathery purple-grey panicles in late summer. It is a fantastic plant for water purification and is often used in reed bed filtration systems. It is extremely hardy (H7) and thrives in wet mud or shallow water up to 20cm deep. It is best suited to the back of a pond or a large bog garden where its height can be appreciated without overshadowing smaller plants.
