Date palm
The Canary Island Date Palm is a majestic and iconic palm, bringing a touch of the tropics to UK gardens, especially in mild, sheltered locations. With its stout trunk and a crown of gracefully arching, feather-like fronds, it creates a dramatic focal point. While relatively slow-growing, it can eventually reach significant heights. It prefers a sunny position and well-drained soil, tolerating some drought once established. Young plants are more susceptible to frost and benefit from protection during harsh winters. Although it may produce small, inedible dates in very warm summers, its primary appeal is its statuesque form and exotic appearance, perfect for a Mediterranean-style landscape.
