Douglas Phlox 'Iceberg'
'Iceberg' is an outstanding cultivar of the prostrate Phlox, forming a dense, mossy carpet of dark green, evergreen foliage. In late spring, the plant is completely transformed as it is smothered in masses of pure white, five-petalled flowers. It is much more compact and slow-growing than many Phlox subulata varieties, making it better suited to smaller rockeries or troughs. It is native to the western United States but is perfectly at home in the UK climate. It requires a sunny position and a well-drained, gritty soil. After the flowering season has finished, a light shearing can help maintain the tight, cushion-like habit and ensure a good display the following year. It is very cold-hardy and provides excellent weed-suppressing groundcover year-round. Its brilliant white flowers are particularly effective at brightening up a grey stone landscape or as a contrast to darker-leaved companions. It is a reliable and easy-going plant for any alpine enthusiast.
