Jerusalem sage

Phlomis purpurea, a vibrant Jerusalem Sage, is an excellent choice for drought-tolerant borders in the UK with a Mediterranean theme. This evergreen sub-shrub forms an attractive mound of grey-green, felted leaves, offering year-round texture. In early summer, it produces whorls of hooded, rosy-purple flowers on upright stems, creating a striking display. It thrives in full sun and very well-drained soil, tolerating poor conditions and coastal exposure. Its architectural seed heads provide continued interest into autumn and winter. An unfussy plant perfect for gravel gardens, sunny banks, or mixed herbaceous borders, attracting pollinators.
