Runner Bean 'Moonlight'

'Moonlight' is a revolutionary British-bred runner bean that crosses the traditional runner bean with the French bean. The result is a self-fertile variety that sets pods reliably even in poor weather conditions when pollinating insects are scarce—a common issue in unpredictable UK summers. It produces masses of beautiful, ornamental white flowers followed by long, smooth-skinned pods that lack the stringiness often found in older varieties. The habit is vigorous and climbing, reaching up to 2.5 metres, requiring strong supports like a wigwam or trellis. The beans have a delicious, meaty texture and classic runner bean flavour. It is an excellent choice for northern gardeners or sites exposed to wind where traditional varieties might fail to set fruit. Sow outdoors from late May once the risk of frost has passed into rich, moisture-retentive soil. Regular picking encourages a continuous harvest through to the first frosts of autumn.
