Amphibious Bistort

A fascinating native plant that can grow in two distinct forms: one terrestrial in damp soil, and one aquatic. In its aquatic form, it produces long, floating stems with attractive, oblong, dark green leaves that rest on the water surface like a miniature water lily. In mid to late summer, it produces upright, club-shaped spikes of densely packed, bright pink flowers that stand 5-10cm above the water. These flowers are rich in nectar and are very attractive to bees and butterflies. It is a very hardy (H7) and vigorous plant, best suited to medium or larger ponds where it can be allowed to spread. It is excellent for providing surface cover and interest in deeper water where other marginals cannot grow, as it can thrive in depths up to 60cm. Its dual nature makes it a unique addition to any garden pond, but caution is advised in very small features due to its speed of growth.

Sun: Full sun to partial shade.

Soil: Deep mud or aquatic loam.
