Pine-leaved Penstemon 'Mersea Yellow'
While most Penstemons are large border perennials, Penstemon pinifolius is a truly shrubby, dwarf species from the mountains of the Southwestern United States, making it a perfect alpine. The cultivar 'Mersea Yellow' is particularly prized for its bright yellow, tubular flowers that appear in mid to late summer. The foliage is unique for a Penstemon, consisting of fine, needle-like, bright green leaves that resemble a dwarf conifer, hence the common name. In the UK, this plant requires a very sunny, warm position and exceptionally well-drained soil to survive. It is relatively hardy (H4) but is sensitive to damp, stagnant air and waterlogged soil in winter. When happy, it forms a low, woody hummock that provides long-lasting colour and interesting texture. It is a perfect choice for a hot, dry rockery or a gravel garden. Light pruning in spring can help keep it compact and encourage new flowering growth.
