Digger's Speedwell
A unique and attractive sub-shrub from Australia that has adapted remarkably well to UK alpine and rock gardens. Parahebe perfoliata is grown as much for its foliage as for its flowers; it features stunning, glaucous, blue-grey leaves that are 'perfoliate', meaning they completely encircle the stem, giving it a look reminiscent of certain Eucalyptus species. In mid to late summer, it produces graceful, nodding racemes of small, violet-blue flowers. While it can reach up to 40cm, in the rock garden it is often kept smaller through pruning or by planting in lean soil. It is reasonably hardy (H4) but may require a sheltered spot or some winter protection in northern or very cold inland areas of the UK. It is extremely drought-tolerant once established and thrives in full sun and very well-drained soil. Its unusual leaf structure and cool colour palette make it an excellent architectural plant for a Mediterranean-style rock garden or a large trough.
