Cascading Parahebe 'Avalanche'
'Avalanche' is a heavy-flowering cultivar of this New Zealand native. It is a low-growing, semi-evergreen sub-shrub that forms a dense, spreading mat. In summer, it is almost entirely covered with small, white, saucer-shaped flowers with a tiny purple eye, creating a 'snow-covered' effect. It is a very versatile plant in the UK garden, suitable for rockeries, the edges of paths, or as a groundcover between taller shrubs. It is relatively easy to grow, preferring a sunny spot and well-drained soil, though it is more tolerant of moist conditions than many true alpines. A light trim after flowering will keep it looking neat and prevent it from becoming woody. It is generally hardy, though it may suffer in very severe winters in inland or northern areas. Its long flowering period and attractive, dark green, serrated leaves make it a valuable addition to any garden looking for low-maintenance summer colour. It is a great choice for coastal gardens too.
