Field Poppy 'Mother of Pearl'

Selected by the legendary Sir Cedric Morris, 'Mother of Pearl' is a sophisticated take on the common field poppy. Instead of the typical bright scarlet, this cultivar offers a breathtaking palette of smoky greys, soft mauves, dusky pinks, and pearlescent whites, often with delicate picotee edges. These ephemeral blooms appear on slender, hairy stems reaching about 60cm, swaying elegantly in the breeze. As a hardy annual, it is perfectly suited to UK wildflower meadows or cottage garden borders. It is easy to grow, preferring to be direct-sown in autumn or spring. While each flower is short-lived, the plant produces a continuous succession of blooms throughout the summer. Seed heads are equally attractive, providing architectural interest and food for birds. It performs best in poor to moderately fertile, well-drained soil in a sunny location.
