European Peony 'Rubra Plena'

This is the classic "Old Memorial Day" peony, a tuberous-rooted perennial that has been a staple of UK cottage gardens for centuries. 'Rubra Plena' is famous for its massive, deeply ruffled, double flowers of an intense, crimson-red. The blooms appear earlier than many other peony varieties, usually in late spring or early summer. The plant forms a substantial mound of deeply lobed, dark green leaves that remain attractive throughout the season. Growing to about 60-70cm tall and wide, it is extremely hardy (H7) and long-lived, often thriving in the same spot for decades. It prefers a position in full sun or very light dappled shade and a deep, fertile, moisture-retentive but well-drained soil. In the UK, peonies are legendary for their dislike of being moved, so choose their permanent site carefully. The tuberous roots should be planted no more than 2-5cm below the soil surface to ensure reliable flowering.
