Pachyphytum 'Red Sky'
'Red Sky' is an attractive, plump-leaved succulent that brings soft, pastel tones to a UK succulent collection. It forms rosettes of thick, fleshy leaves that are slightly flattened and end in a soft point. The foliage is a glaucous blue-green, but when grown in bright light or exposed to cool (but not freezing) autumn temperatures, it develops beautiful shades of pink, lavender, and deep red. Like many Pachyphytums, it is covered in a powdery epicuticular wax (farina) that should not be touched, as it marks easily. In spring, it produces arching flower stems with small, bell-shaped reddish flowers. This plant is tender (H2) and must be kept indoors or in a greenhouse during the UK winter. It is particularly well-suited to decorative containers on a sunny patio in summer. Over-watering is the primary cause of failure, so ensure the soil is allowed to dry out significantly before re-watering. It is a slow-growing but rewarding plant for enthusiasts.
