Plant 'Iron Cross'

Oxalis tetraphylla 'Iron Cross' is a charming and distinctive tuberous perennial often grown in UK rock gardens or as an edging plant. It is instantly recognisable by its four-lobed, clover-like leaves, each featuring a prominent dark purple-maroon smudge at the base, forming a cross-like shape in the centre. From early summer, it produces clusters of delicate, funnel-shaped rosy-pink flowers on slender stems that rise above the foliage. This plant is relatively hardy in the UK (rated H4), meaning it can often survive the winter in well-drained soils in the south, though a protective mulch or lifting the small bulbs is advisable in colder areas. It prefers a sunny position to ensure the flowers open fully, as they tend to close in shade or at night. Reaching only 15-20cm in height, it is perfect for containers or the front of a border. It spreads slowly via tiny tubers and revitalises the garden with its fresh green and purple foliage.
