Royal Fern 'Purpurascens'

Osmunda regalis 'Purpurascens' is a particularly striking cultivar of the magnificent Royal Fern, celebrated for its unique coloration. While retaining the majestic size and architectural presence of the species, reaching 1.5 to 2.5 metres in height and spread, 'Purpurascens' distinguishes itself with fronds that emerge with a rich, coppery-purple hue in spring. This deep colour gradually softens to a bronze-green before maturing to a standard green, providing a multi-seasonal display of colour. The fertile spore-bearing fronds also exhibit a more intense purplish-brown. Like the species, it demands consistently moist to wet, acidic soil and thrives in partial shade, making it ideal for bog gardens, pond margins, or damp woodland settings where its impressive size and distinctive coloration can be fully appreciated. A true showstopper for very damp conditions.
