Holly-leaved Osmanthus 'Variegatus'
Osmanthus heterophyllus 'Variegatus' is a slow-growing, evergreen shrub that produces an exceptionally handsome and dense hedge. It features small, holly-like leaves that are sharply toothed and a deep green, heavily margined with creamy-white. This variegation gives the plant a bright, silvery appearance from a distance, making it ideal for lightening up darker areas of the garden. In autumn, it produces tiny clusters of incredibly fragrant white flowers that, although often hidden by the foliage, fill the surrounding air with a sweet, apricot-like scent. This plant is a fantastic alternative to variegated Holly, as it is generally more compact and slower to grow, requiring less frequent maintenance. It is hardy throughout most of the UK but appreciates protection from cold, drying winds. It grows well in most fertile, well-drained soils and can be maintained as a sharp, formal hedge or left to grow into a more natural, informal screen.
