Olive Tree 'Arbequina'

'Arbequina' is a highly regarded olive cultivar for the UK, known for its relative cold-hardiness and compact, slow-growing habit. It features the classic silvery-grey, evergreen foliage and gnarled bark that characterise the Mediterranean landscape. Small, creamy-white flowers appear in summer, followed by small, highly oil-rich black fruits if the summer is long and hot enough. While olives are generally hardy to around -10°C (H4), they must be protected from freezing winds and excessive winter wet. 'Arbequina' is particularly well-suited for container life, allowing it to be moved to a more sheltered position or a cool conservatory during particularly harsh winters. It requires a position in full sun and very well-drained soil. Regular pruning is not essential but can be done in spring to maintain a desired shape or size. It brings an instant sense of the Mediterranean to any courtyard or sunny terrace.

Soil: Well-drained, moderately fertile soil; tolerates chalky soils.
