Perennial Basil 'African Blue'

Perennial Basil is a fantastic alternative for UK gardeners seeking a more enduring basil presence, offering a continuous supply of aromatic leaves from spring to autumn. Unlike its annual cousins, this cultivar forms a woody-stemmed sub-shrub, growing to about 60-90cm, with attractive purple-tinged or green leaves. While not as hardy as some perennials, it can often survive mild UK winters in sheltered spots (H3/H4) or if brought indoors. It thrives in full sun and well-drained soil. Spikes of lavender flowers appear in late summer, which can be pinched out to promote leaf growth. Its flavour is often described as a blend of sweet basil and mint.
